Opening of the Maly Trostenets memorial site

The Federal President held a speech at the opening of the second section of the Maly Trostenets memorial site in Minsk on 29 June: "Europe’s shared responsibility and commitment to the 'never again!' rallying cry is based on us knowing what people did to their fellow human beings right here. If we want to continue to remember, also without the help of survivors, why this Europe built on humanitarian principles, this common European continent, is so important, then we must teach and learn its history, and that knowledge must be passed down to every new generation."

Conference "The Struggle for Democracy"

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a speech at the conference, The Struggle for Democracy, on 19 June in Los Angeles: "While in the last few years we were overly self-confident in our belief that we had achieved liberal democracy in our own societies once and for all and that this model would gain ground in the rest of the world, we see today that even in our own countries this liberal democracy does not go unchallenged and is certainly not considered to be the measure of all things in the rest of the world."

Conference "Poland and Germany in Europe"

The Federal President held a speech at the conference "Poland and Germany in Europe" on 5 June in Warsaw: We have a great deal to lose. If the European Union’s cohesion crumbles, then none of us will be any more able to assert our interests as nation states. On the contrary, we will forfeit this ability. Let us therefore continue to venture down the path that others have trodden before us, a path to a Europe in which we stand up together for our security, our prosperity, our freedom and, yes, also for our national idiosyncrasies.
