Visit to Afghanistan

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on 13 July for an official visit. Accompanied by his wife Elke Büdenbender, he landed at the airport in Mazar e Sharif in the north of the country in the morning. During his one-day visit, the Federal President met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah for political talks in Kabul. In the afternoon, he visited the memorial at Camp Marmal to remember the German soldiers killed in the line of duty.

State Banquet in honour of the President of China

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the State Banquet in honour of the President of China on 5 July: "There is no doubt that our countries have a special responsibility with regard to climate issues – this rings even truer in view of the announcement by the US to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, which was probably the biggest success story of international cooperation in recent years. China and Germany, on the other hand, stand firmly by their promises made in the context of the Agreement."

International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the ceremony awarding the International Charlemagne Prize to Timothy Garton Ash on 25 May: "The life experience of Timothy Garton Ash and his courageous friends in Central and Eastern Europe shows us, however, that while the path of European unification, the path that leads it from an idea to a reality, is not a linear path, but it is one that stands open; it is possible!"
