50 years of the Élysée Treaty

On 22 January, Federal President Joachim Gauck welcomed French President François Hollande with military honours at Schloss Bellevue. Hollande had come to Berlin to join the festivities marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty. In the afternoon, the Federal President took part in a joint session of the German Bundestag and the French National Assembly. In the early evening, he invited guests to a concert in the Berliner Philharmonie, where he also gave a speech.

Visit by President of Greece

Federal President Joachim Gauck met the Greek President Karolos Papoulias in Berlin on 7 January 2013. In the morning, the two Presidents visited the exhibition “Olympia: Myth – Cult – Games” in the Martin-Gropius-Bau. With over 800 pieces, the exhibition is a joint German-Greek project and both Presidents serve as patrons.

Trip to Afghanistan

Federal President Joachim Gauck travelled to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for an official visit with his partner Daniela Schadt from 17 to 19 December. He arrived at Mazar-e-Sharif airport in the north of the country on 17 December. That evening, he met with German soldiers and allies as well as with police officers and development workers.

Role in the international arena

Under Article 59 of the Basic Law, the Federal President represents the Federal Republic of Germany in matters of international law, concludes treaties with foreign states on its behalf, accredits German diplomats posted abroad and receives all foreign ambassadors to Germany.
