Opening of the Thomas Mann House

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a speech at the opening of the Thomas Mann House on 18 June in Los Angeles: "Which other form of society would be more suited to this 'difficulty and nobility', to the challenge and adventure of humanity, than ours: a free and democratic society! The struggle for democracy, the struggle for a free and open society is what will continue to connect us, the United States and Germany."

Conference "Poland and Germany in Europe"

The Federal President held a speech at the conference "Poland and Germany in Europe" on 5 June in Warsaw: "We have a great deal to lose. If the European Union’s cohesion crumbles, then none of us will be any more able to assert our interests as nation states. On the contrary, we will forfeit this ability. Let us therefore continue to venture down the path that others have trodden before us, a path to a Europe in which we stand up together for our security, our prosperity, our freedom and, yes, also for our national idiosyncrasies."

Official visit to Ukraine

The Federal President visited Ukraine from 29 to 30 May 2018. In Kyiv, he first held talks with President Poroshenko and Prime Minister Groysman. The talks were focussed on the state of play of reforms in Ukraine. Later on, the Federal President gave a speech to students at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. On the second day of his visit, he met pupils and teachers of German in Kyiv and students and lecturers of German Studies in Lviv, thus also marking the tenth anniversary of the initiative "Schools: Partners for the Future".

Official visit to the Netherlands

The Federal President and Elke Büdenbender visited the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 15 and 16 May 2018. Steinmeier was received by King Willem-Alexander and held talks with representatives of both parliamentary chambers as well as the Prime Minister. Furthermore, the Federal President and Elke Büdenbender visited the University of Technology and a start up centre in Delft. In Amsterdam, integration and urban development were a prominent feature of the second day of their visit.
