Discussion at the Asan Institute

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a speech at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies on 9 February: "But we must also remember that dialogue is the only possible way to achieve détente, and ultimately peace and unity. Those who are serious about finding solutions in this dialogue must maintain the political pressure, but must also keep suggesting ideas and making proposals for a better future. They must want to overcome the status quo. In short, they need hope."

At the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a speech at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan on 7 February on the occasion of his visit to Korea: "However, we did learn one important lesson: controlling nuclear proliferation and co-operating with regimes that violate international rules can only work if the international community stands united."

Visit at the Lebanese University

The Federal President held a speech at the Lebanese University on 30 January: "For me, the way for the Middle East to achieve a brighter future is precisely not to escalate or polarise. Peace will not come about if politicians maintain absolute positions, or insist that all of their interests be fulfilled; rather, they must take the opposite approach. Here in Lebanon, this is not an academic issue. Instead, it is a question of survival."

Official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

The Federal President and Elke Büdenbender visited the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from 27 to 29 January. During their visit, they attended a lunch with King Abdullah II and Queen Rania and talked with entrepreneurs and students. The Federal President also visited the refugee camp in Azraq and the Bundeswehr contingent stationed in Jordan.
