The Federal President and Elke Büdenbender payed a state visit to the Republic of India from 21 to 26 March. They were received by President Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi, where the Federal President also held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and civil society representatives. Moreover, they traveled to Varanasi, which is a holy city for Hindus and Buddhists, and to Chennai, which is an important location for German business in India.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier travelled to the Portuguese Republic from 1 to 2 March 2018. In Lisbon, he held political talks with the President, the Prime Minister and the President of the Assembly of the Republic. On the second day of the trip, the Federal President travelled to Porto, where he visited the Science and Technology Park at the University of Porto (UPTEC) and attended cultural events together with the Portuguese President.
