State visit to Greece

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender payed a state visit to the Hellenic Republic from 10 to 12 October. The Federal President first visited the memorial site of the Chaidari National Socialist concentration camp. In Athens he was welcomed with military honours by President Pavlopoulos. Thereafter he had political talks inter alia with Prime Minister Tsipras and gave a speech at a ceremony where he is to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens. At last he visited the excavation site of Ancient Messini and met young start-up entrepreneurs for talks.

State banquet in honour of the Turkish President

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a speech at the state banquet in honour of the President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 28 September in Schloss Bellevue: "A single visit is not enough to restore normality. However, it could be a start, the start of a path that leads, via many tangible steps, to new trust."

State visit to Finland

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender paid a state visit to the Republic of Finland from 17 to 19 September. The first item on the agenda was political talks in Helsinki with Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Juha Sipilä. They also visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site Suomenlinna, a fortress island. The trip ended with a visit to Oulu, the most northerly city in the EU and the hub of the Finnish digital sector.

Arraiolos Group in Latvia

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Latvia on 13 and 14 September for this year’s Arraiolos meeting of non executive Presidents of the European Union. The Presidents this year discussed the topics "The future of Europe – yesterday and today" and "Social resilience in times of hard and soft security". This year it was the fourteenth meeting of the Group which was named after the Portuguese town of Arraiolos where the first meeting was held in 2003.
