State visit to Finland

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender paid a state visit to the Republic of Finland from 17 to 19 September. The first item on the agenda was political talks in Helsinki with Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Juha Sipilä. They also visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site Suomenlinna, a fortress island. The trip ended with a visit to Oulu, the most northerly city in the EU and the hub of the Finnish digital sector.

Arraiolos Group in Latvia

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Latvia on 13 and 14 September for this year’s Arraiolos meeting of non executive Presidents of the European Union. The Presidents this year discussed the topics "The future of Europe – yesterday and today" and "Social resilience in times of hard and soft security". This year it was the fourteenth meeting of the Group which was named after the Portuguese town of Arraiolos where the first meeting was held in 2003.

Awarding of the Peace of Westphalia Prize

The Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a speech on the awarding of the peace of Westphalia Prize to the Baltic states on 14 July: "They have shown us and the world that they aim for a new and better future and that this better future lies in the European Union. Europe is the answer to the all-consuming catastrophe of the 20th century and to an epoch of violence and rampant nationalism."

Opening of the Maly Trostenets memorial site

The Federal President held a speech at the opening of the second section of the Maly Trostenets memorial site in Minsk on 29 June: "Europe’s shared responsibility and commitment to the 'never again!' rallying cry is based on us knowing what people did to their fellow human beings right here. If we want to continue to remember, also without the help of survivors, why this Europe built on humanitarian principles, this common European continent, is so important, then we must teach and learn its history."
