Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a speech at the state banquet during his visit to the Gambia on 13 December: "Germany is determined to support Gambia in strengthening its democracy – with joint efforts in the fields of energy, security, culture, and – most importantly – the creation of jobs. "

State visit to Ghana

The Federal President will pay a state visit to Ghana from 11 to 13 December. He will meet Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, for political talks in Accra. Their talks will focus on the development of bilateral relations and Africa’s development. Further topics of the visit will include training, academic collaboration, economic cooperation and migration. Furthermore, he will open a migration centre funded by Germany.

Marion Dönhoff Prize to the "New York Times"

The Federal President held a speech at the Marion Dönhoff Prize award ceremony in Hamburg on 3 December: "Anyone in Germany who now says, with a certain cultural snobbishness: ‘let’s break with the United States – everything over there is headed in the wrong direction and our common ground is long gone’ – to every such person I say: Just take one glance at the "New York Times"!"

Visit to the Slovak Republic

Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier paid his first official visit to the Slovak Republic on 17 November. He met Slovak President Andrej Kiska for political talks in Bratislava. Moreover, he took part in a panel discussion in Žilina attended by civil society representatives and students entitled "The future of democracy in Europe" and visited an Orthodox synagogue.
