Honours and Decorations

Honouring individuals who have rendered distinguished services to the nation has traditionally been one of the head of state's duties. In the Federal Republic of Germany, as in nearly all countries in the world, honours and decorations are awarded as a way of paying public tribute to an outstanding individual. The Federal President awards

The Federal President also has supreme authority in all matters concerning honours and decorations in the Federal Republic of Germany.
He may, for instance, grant a German citizen permission to accept and wear foreign honours and decorations or to accept foreign titles. In carrying out this aspect of his duties the Federal President is assisted by the Honours and Decorations Chancellery in the Office of the Federal President, which provides relevant information and in cooperation with the State and Senate Chancelleries of the 16 Federal Länder prepares and implements the Federal President's decisions in this area.
