Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier visited the Republic of The Gambia from 13 to 14 December.
Steinmeier is the first German President to visit the Republic of The Gambia. One of the aims of his trip is to show recognition for the country’s democratic transformation and political support for its stabilisation.
The talks with Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, focussed on migration and reconciliation issues. The German President also met representatives of civil society and non governmental organisations as well as so called returnees. In addition, Steinmeier visited a hospital run by the Workers’ Samaritan Federation and the Amadou Bansang Jobarteh School of Music in Banjul.
The first stage of the Federal President’s West Africa trip was to Ghana from 11 to 13 December.
