On 25 April 2012 Federal President Joachim Gauck took part in the opening of the exhibition “Dutch Design – Huis van Oranje” at Schloss Oranienbaum, a palace near Dessau, Germany. Gauck was joined at the opening by Ms Daniela Schadt and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. A group tour of the exhibition followed the opening ceremony. The two heads of state were accompanied by Reiner Haseloff, Minister-President of the German Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt.

From 26 April to 30 September 2012, the exhibition at Schloss Oranienbaum will feature contemporary work by designers and fashion designers from the Netherlands, supplemented by precious historical objects from the Royal Archives in The Hague as well as paintings from the collection of the cultural foundation.

Oranienbaum Schloss and the surrounding town were laid out beginning in 1683 according to the plans of the Dutch architect Cornelis Ryckwaert and are a part of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Dessau-Wörlitz cultural foundation has been extensively restoring the palace for years; with the Federal President and Queen Beatrix having assumed patronage of the restorations.

The exhibition opening was the Federal President’s first meeting with the Queen of the Netherlands. On 5 – 6 May 2012 Federal President Gauck will visit the Kingdom of the Netherlands, where he will be the first foreign head of state to give a speech for Liberation Day, the Netherlands’ national day in commemoration of the country’s liberation from German occupation during the Second World War.
