On 24 October 2012 Federal President Joachim Gauck attended the inauguration in Berlin of the Memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe Murdered under the National Socialist Regime. The memorial, created by artist Dani Karavan, is situated between the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building. This is the third memorial to a minority persecuted by the National Socialists, following those to Jews and homosexuals, and like them it is located in a prominent position in the centre of the capital. The Central Council of German Sinti and Roma estimates that up to 500,000 Sinti and Roma were killed by the National Socialist Regime.

The memorial consists of a retractable black stone at the centre of a round pool roughly twelve metres in diameter. In keeping with Karavan’s wishes, a fresh wild flower is to be laid on the plinth every day, even in winter.
