In a video message on 9 September, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier extended condolences to the people of the United Kingdom: "Queen Elizabeth II was your most gracious queen, and she was also a true friend and shining example to us. She enjoyed the utmost admiration and respect throughout the world – for her steadfastness weathering every storm, her natural authority, her immense experience and her exemplary devotion to duty. Her death marks the end of an era."

Dear Friends in the United Kingdom: We Germans stand with you in this hour of sadness.

Queen Elizabeth II was your most gracious queen, and she was also a true friend and shining example to us.

She enjoyed the utmost admiration and respect throughout the world – for her steadfastness weathering every storm, her natural authority, her immense experience and her exemplary devotion to duty. Her death marks the end of an era.

The United Kingdom offered Germany the hand of reconciliation – and the hand of reconciliation after two world wars was also the hand of the Queen. Germany mourns the Queen, and we remain committed to her example of friendship and humanity. We are grateful for the friendship she offered to us.

We feel the personal loss that you, King Charles, and your family are suffering. We share in your grief. At this difficult time, I wish you, Your Majesty, strength, God’s blessing and a sure hand in tackling the great task which has now passed to you.
