Three years have passed since the watershed moment that was 24 February 2022 – three years of suffering, violence and loss for the Ukrainian people. Yet also three years of resolute defence of freedom and sovereignty.
The Ukrainians are not just fighting for their territory. They are fighting for democracy, for self-determination, for a free Europe – for all the values that for us, too, are fundamental. The courage shown by the Ukrainians deserves our deepest respect.
To anchor peace and freedom in Europe, we need to be resolute in supporting Ukraine. Germany stands firmly by Ukraine’s side – providing humanitarian assistance, protection for refugees and military support. And we will not let up until this illegal war is over.
However, we are also thinking about the future: about the reconstruction of towns that have been destroyed, about protection for Ukraine when the fighting stops, the return to a peaceful life, Ukraine’s future in the European Union. Our support is needed here – and Ukraine can rest assured that it has this support.
Today in particular we remember the victims of this war. We mourn with their families. And we send a clear message: Ukraine is not alone. We stand together – for peace in freedom and for a secure future for sovereign Ukraine in Europe.
